(WBNG Binghamton) This weekend the section 4 football semifinals kickoff around the southern tier.
As usual we have teams that are favorites, and others that are long shots.
But more than ever before, it has been a wild ride in getting here.
We look back on the ups and downs of the season in this week's action sports spotlight.
We'll start in class "D", where there have been the extremes of surprises.
First Thomas Edison had to forfeit their season after week 2.
But the biggest surprises were on the field.
After 31 straight years of at least a .500 record, the Walton Warriors had a losing record.
Even more surprising was the team that reversed that fortune, as Harpursville ended a streak of 27 consecutive seasons without a winning record with a division title and a trip to the playoffs, where they won on the road this past Saturday.
"Things have worked out and it's been a wonderful season. But these kids have earned it. They play football the right way and the fundamental way. They worked their butts off in the offseason. It's been a wonderful ride for these guys and they deserve every bit of success they've had," says Harpursville head coach Tim Petras.
"We just keep writing history. It's awesome in my senior year. Keep it going," says Harpursville senior Mason Dean.
Class "C" saw a return to normal as Chenango Forks took the division title to return to the post season.
Waiting for the Blue Devils at the other end of the sectional bracket is defending champ Waverly, as the Wolverines are ranked 3rd in the state, compared to 4th ranked Forks.
Moving up to "B", as in bragging rights.
We knew defending state champ Maine-Endwell would be good, we just didn't know how good.
Their average win is 52-8, including their closest victory, this past weekend's 28-7 victory over Union-Endicott, the top area team in class "A".
To take our logic to the next level, U-E beat the top "AA" team Binghamton two weeks before.
So the if A then B logic tells us Maine-Endwell is the best team in the area.
"We try not to look because being ranked first in the state doesn't mean anything. We were never ranked #1 last year and we were lucky enough to be successful and win the title. It's great that they have the rankings, but we just want to focus on it game by game and not let that stuff get in the way," says Maine-Endwell Matt Gallagher.
Everyone gets a chance to prove it this weekend as we kickoff the sectional semifinals.
