The Big Three American automakers continue to prove that they remain forces to be reckoned with, not has-beens. After decades of decline, 2012 has been an especially good year for these automakers. And if the new cars they plan to debut at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show are any indication, the next few years might be even stronger.
All three automakers ? Ford, Chrysler, and GM ? will debut brand new cars at the auto show. When new designs from the Big Three are combined with new offerings from European and Asian companies, the LA Auto Show will boast the world-premiere of over 50 new cars. All in all, experts are heralding the LA show as another good sign that the auto industry is moving towards a stronger position.
GM?s Chevrolet Spark EV
Following up on the success of the Chevy Volt, which currently holds the distinction of being the most fuel-efficient car with a gas engine, GM will debut the new Chevy Spark EV at the LA Auto Show. Unlike the Volt, the Spark is 100 percent electric, making it the first of its kind for GM. According to GM, the Spark EVis designed specifically for owners who live in the city and have predictable, short driving patterns.
GM also plans a hybrid version of the Spark that will feature an 83 hp, four-cylinder engine.
Chrysler?s Fiat 500 EV
Chrysler Group will debut an all-electric version of the Fiat 500 minicar. The 500 will eventually be available for customers in California on a low-volume basis. The electric Fiat 500 will be a rare venture into electrified technology for Chrysler, which has yet to introduce an electrified car in its lineup. Further details will be announced at the show.
Ford?s C-Max Energi
Ford is also entering the green car game. Ford?s C-Max Energi will appear at the upcoming auto show. A plug-in hybrid, the C-Max Energi is already scheduled to be available at 200 car dealerships. Another 700 dealerships are enrolled for certification. Originally, Ford had planned to sell the new car at only 350 dealerships by early 2013; the tripling of this number indicates that Ford expects competition from the Spark EV and other electric vehicles and wants to make sure it?s getting a sufficient slice of the green pie. Early 2013 will also feature the Ford Fusion Hybrid, another energy-efficient car from Ford.
In sum, the LA Auto Show proves that the gains made by the Big Three over the past couple of years should continue to grow as American companies finally catch up to Asian and European makers in the creation of ever more fuel-efficient vehicles.
