I am a true sports fan not a casual ?band wagon jumper that goes with every winning team. ?Some people cheer for any team that is popular.
Loyal fans are good, but if you follow a team based on popularity then you are not a sports fan.
This article is for real sports fans and people with ethics.
A real sport fan is a fan of the sport not a particular team; sure we have our favorites, but we cheer for opposing team players when they do well because we appreciate greatness.
When the NBA playoffs ended this year I was left with a dilemma.
I could not get my sport ?fix?.
The Olympics came at the right time to help me get over my hibernation.
The NFL is one of my favorite sports.
Heartbreak Hotel
In 2001 the Los Angeles Raiders broke my heart when they lost to the Tampa Bay buccaneers in the Superbowl.
The Raiders were not finished breaking their fans hearts because they left L.A. without a team when they went to Oakland, CA.
I was in a?quandary.
A new day.
I decided I could no longer root for a particular team. ?I became a fan of the sport.
I applauded for any player who played by the rules and achieved greatness in their sport.
Unethical practices of the sport.
The New Orleans Saints came close to ruining every football fan?s dream when they were found guilty of a ?Pay for Performance program?.
Before I tell you about the pay for performance program I have to say this, the Saints are not the only team who wanted to win at all cost, but they are the latest ones to be caught.
What is the Pay for Performance Program?
Most NFL fans are familiar with what happened, but I need to tell those who have a different hobby.
The Saints were accused of paying certain players to intentionally injure opposing players in a game.
The Saints players funded a 50,000 dollar bounty for the last three years. ?The program paid 1,500 dollars to any player who knocked out an opposing player and 1,000 dollars for causing an opposing player to be carted off the field.
The money was doubled or tripled in the playoffs.
Players mentioned as targets were Brett Favre and Kurt Warner.
The bounty reached its greatest payout in 2009; the same year the Saints won the?Superbowl.
Unethical practices hurt the game in several ways.
- The injury of a player is criminal when done outside the rules of the game.
- The game is violent already so intentionally hurting people is barbaric.
- The fans lose because they came to see a game played by rules not a grunge match.
- People running around making their own rules sets the game back.
- The game loses sport fans.
A lot was at stake for the Saints and the game.
The Saints are lucky no criminal charges were brought against them?because as I mentioned above I believe this bordered criminal behavior.
There are people in jail today for intentionally injuring others. ?If it was not for the game, the players involved might be facing assault charges.
Again, I am not bashing the Saints, but they are the latest team to hurt the sport they play.
I think steroid use is unethical also.
Sports maybe violent, seen not important by some, barbaric to others, ?or the purpose is questioned, but it brings joy to millions of people.
We all have a competitive spirit in us and sports is a good way to release competitiveness.
Players involved.
The league established there were 22 of 27 defensive players involved including Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams. ?Head coach Sean Payton was aware of the program.
The league did not take this unethical violation laying down. ?Commissioner Roger Goodell handed down historic penalties.
Their fines.
Several defensive players were either fined money or suspended for many games.
The biggest loser in all this was head coach Sean Payton who was suspended for the year, but the real losers are the fans.
To be honest and fair to the Saints as I mentioned the Saints are not the only team guilty of breaking the rules, head coach Buddy Ryan was accused of placing a bounty on the Dallas cowboy players in 1989.
I want to know how you feel about this story.
I am sorry Saint fans but I only reported what happened; I tried to keep my opinions out of the facts.
