Military veterans in the Bay Area now have an advantage in the hiring process if they are interested in working at Bay Area Rapid Transit.
The BART Board of Directors today announced it has approved a new hiring policy giving military veterans precedence in the hiring process, BART spokeswoman Luna Salaver said.
Beginning Jan. 1, the policy will give external job candidates with at least 181 days of active status a 5 percent chance over the competition, Salaver said.
Veterans, however, must have a passing score in an exam during the first phase of the hiring process, she said.
To be considered for the policy, veterans must show proof of active status, and be honorably discharged, Salaver said.
Anyone dishonorably discharged is disqualified.
"We adopted this policy to honor those men and women who put their lives on the line to defend our freedom," BART Board President John McPartland said.
McPartland spearheaded the policy change.
BART also has a program to help assist active military personnel on leave from ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Any member of the military on leave with a valid leave order form can receive a $50 BART fare ticket. Tickets can be claimed at the Lake Merritt station. The program was launched in January 2010.
