(AP) ? It was supposed to be a thrilling ride down a ski slope inside a giant inflatable ball that is to be one of the symbols of next year's Winter Olympics; it ended in tragedy for the two Russian men inside.

The transparent plastic ball ? known as a zorb ? veered off course and sailed over a rock ledge in the rugged Caucasus Mountains of southern Russia. The ball picked up speed as it flew down the steep slope, rolling and bouncing. One man was killed and the other badly injured.

The man who died, 27-year-old Denis Burakov, was with friends at the Dombai ski resort, where they frequently went snowboarding, on Jan. 3 when he decided to take a ride in a zorb being operated next to a beginners' slope. His friend Vladimir Shcherbakov joined him.

An eight-minute video taken on Burakov's phone by one of his friends shows the two men being fitted into harnesses inside the zorb, which consists of two polyurethane balls with a layer of air between them. The zorb is then released to roll down the hill, the two men spinning inside.

But the zorb bounces off of the intended path, and a man waiting for it at the bottom of the hill tries in vain to catch the ball before it pops over a rocky ledge and disappears down a gorge below Mount Mussa-Achitara.

The person filming the video is heard swearing and asking "What's down there?" The answer from someone off camera: "It's a catastrophe down there."

The Emergencies Ministry said both men were ejected from the zorb as it tumbled and they landed on the snow about 10 meters (30 feet) apart after having rolled about 1.5 kilometers (a mile). Still conscious and able to stand, they were rescued by two skiers, who then pulled both men up to the top of the hill. Burakov suffered serious spinal injuries and died on the way to the hospital. Shcherbakov suffered a concussion and other injuries and remains hospitalized.

The accident prompted the emergencies minister to demand on Wednesday that Russia address its lax enforcement of safety rules for winter sports, citing a series of accidents over the January holidays. Vladimir Puchkov said during a televised meeting with officials in charge of rescue services across the country that they should take extra measures to ensure safety, in particular at Russia's ski slopes.

Sergei Loginov, deputy director of Z-orb.ru, the largest supplier of zorbs in Russia, said the zorbing run that killed Burakov was in violation of all safety rules. Zorbing requires a groomed gentle slope with fences on both sides of the track and a secure spot at the bottom where the ball can be safely brought to rest, he said, but none of this was present at Dombai.

"It's not even irresponsibility. It's an experiment on life," Loginov said. "It's all or nothing. They either survive or they don't."

The sport of zorbing originated in the 1990s in New Zealand and is now done around the world, most often on grassy slopes. Loginov said there are several zorbing spots on the outskirts of Moscow and dozens more around the country.

Zorbs have been adopted as a symbol of the 2014 Winter Olympics, which Russia is holding in Sochi.

"The transparency of zorbs also reflect the open, accessible and inclusive society that Sochi 2014 Games is helping to build," Dmitry Chernyshenko, head of the organizing committee, said in 2010.

Sochi's modern ski resorts also are in the Caucasus Mountains. Dombai and other less-developed resorts are located to the east in the North Caucasus region, a patchwork of mainly Muslim republics suffering from poverty and unrest stemming from an Islamic insurgency.

"Until 2006, hundreds of people died every year at the North Caucasus ski resorts," said Kantemir Davydov, an Emergencies Ministry spokesman in southern Russia. "That number has fallen sharply, but still on average 20 to 30 tourists die every year. The causes of the deaths are various, but the root is the same: There is no clear system assuring tourism safety."

Eager for any business that brings in badly needed tourist revenue, local officials are reluctant to enforce safety requirements, Davydov said.

Federal investigators said they were inspecting the Dombai resort and attempting to determine who was responsible for the fatal zorb ride.

Russian state television suggested that one reason winter sports in Russia so often take lives is that people too often ignore basic safety rules. Its report showed families sledding on a slope near Moscow that was clearly marked "no sledding" and said six people had been hospitalized Tuesday with injuries, including concussions and broken bones.

In Italy, a snowmobile driven by a Russian citizen crashed into a ravine during a nighttime outing on a steep ski slope last week, killing six Russians being pulled behind the vehicle on a sled. Italian police arrested the driver on Wednesday.

Former Representative Giffords launches gun control drive

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona is launching a group aimed at curbing gun violence, challenging the political clout of the well-funded gun lobby two years after she was shot in the head while meeting with constituents.

Giffords, herself a gun owner, is starting the effort called Americans for Responsible Solutions with her husband, former U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly.

"Enough," the former congresswoman told ABC television in an interview aired on Tuesday, calling for common-sense measures to reduce violence after a string of recent mass shootings.

Giffords was shot and severely wounded when gunman Jared Loughner opened fire outside a Tucson supermarket where she was meeting with constituents on January 8, 2011. Six people were killed and 13 wounded in that attack.

Since then, public debate over gun control laws has been fueled by a July rampage at the premiere of a Batman movie in Aurora, Colorado, that killed 12 people and wounded 58 others, and the massacre of 20 children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in December.

The new initiative will push for background checks for private gun sales and look at ways to better address mental illness, among other efforts, Kelly told ABC.

Giffords' group aims to take on the National Rifle Association, which in 2011 spent over 11 times more on lobbying than all gun control lobbyists combined.

The new group has set up a political action committee to raise funds "to balance the influence of the gun lobby," it said on its website (http://www.americansforresponsiblesolutions.org).

"Until now, the gun lobby's political contributions, advertising and lobbying have dwarfed spending from anti-gun violence groups. No longer," Giffords wrote in an opinion piece published on Tuesday in USA Today.

"Winning even the most common-sense reforms will require a fight ... Achieving reforms to reduce gun violence and prevent mass shootings will mean matching gun lobbyists in their reach and resources," she added.

It was not immediately clear how Giffords' initiative would work with other gun control groups, including Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

Brady Campaign President Dan Gross said its supporters "stood shoulder to shoulder" with Giffords, but a spokeswoman could not immediately say how the groups might collaborate.

U.S. President Barack Obama pledged after the Connecticut shooting to take swift action to reduce gun violence and has created a task force led by Vice President Joe Biden that is due to report later this month on possible measures.

The task force is examining legislation that would ban assault rifles, but is also looking at the role of violent movies and videogames in mass shootings and whether there is adequate access to mental health services.

Biden and his task force are scheduled to meet this week with victims of gun violence, gun safety groups, hunting groups and gun owners, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters. The NRA's top lobbyist, James J. Baker, will also attend.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will propose a stricter assault weapons ban on Wednesday in his State of the State address, The New York Times reported, citing unnamed people briefed on the matter. New York is one of seven states that has some kind of ban on assault weapons, but Cuomo wants to tighten its loopholes, the Times said.

GUN OWNERSHIP

Giffords' new effort comes just days after she visited Newtown to meet with families of the victims of last month's Sandy Hook school massacre.

She also recently met with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who heads his own initiative, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, that is pushing for what he calls "reasonable" gun controls.

These include background checks for gun owners, and curbs on sales of powerful semi-automatic rifles and extended capacity magazines of the type used in the mass shootings in Newtown and Aurora.

"The reality is that most Americans think it's crazy to have assault weapons and high-capacity magazines," Bloomberg said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.

As a member of Congress, Giffords was a supporter of gun ownership rights and said she owned a Glock 9-mm handgun. Her shift to vocal gun control advocate is reminiscent of two other American politicians who took on the powerful gun lobby after their lives were shattered by shootings.

The Brady law establishing a criminal background check for handgun sales is named after Jim Brady, a former press secretary for Republican President Ronald Reagan who was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt on Reagan that also wounded the president in 1981.

New York Democratic Representative Carolyn McCarthy, who has fought a lonely battle in Congress for gun control for 15 years, ran for Congress after her husband, Dennis, was killed and son Kevin seriously wounded when a gunman opened fire on Long Island Railroad train riders in 1993, killing six.

The recent mass shootings and the threat of tighter gun restrictions has spurred intense reaction on both sides.

Consumer demand for guns appears to have soared in recent weeks, according to FBI data.

Gun control supporters worry that other looming issues, such as the battle on Capitol Hill over the government debt ceiling, could hamper efforts in Congress.

Bloomberg's group launched its own new ad on Tuesday with the mother of Christina-Taylor Green, a child who was killed in the Arizona shooting in which Giffords was wounded.

"Twenty heartbroken families lost a child in the Sandy Hook school shooting. I know how much it hurts," Roxanna Green said in the ad.

"I have one question for our political leaders: when will you find the courage to stand up to the gun lobby?"

NASA's Kepler discovers 461 new planet candidates

Jan. 7, 2013 ? NASA's Kepler mission Monday announced the discovery of 461 new planet candidates. Four of the potential new planets are less than twice the size of Earth and orbit in their sun's "habitable zone," the region in the planetary system where liquid water might exist on the surface of a planet.

Based on observations conducted from May 2009 to March 2011, the findings show a steady increase in the number of smaller-size planet candidates and the number of stars with more than one candidate.

"There is no better way to kick off the start of the Kepler extended mission than to discover more possible outposts on the frontier of potentially life-bearing worlds," said Christopher Burke, Kepler scientist at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., who is leading the analysis.

Since the last Kepler catalog was released in February 2012, the number of candidates discovered in the Kepler data has increased by 20 percent and now totals 2,740 potential planets orbiting 2,036 stars. The most dramatic increases are seen in the number of Earth-size and super Earth-size candidates discovered, which grew by 43 and 21 percent respectively.

The new data increase the number of stars discovered to have more than one planet candidate from 365 to 467. Today, 43 percent of Kepler's planet candidates are observed to have neighbor planets.

"The large number of multi-candidate systems being found by Kepler implies that a substantial fraction of exoplanets reside in flat multi-planet systems," said Jack Lissauer, planetary scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "This is consistent with what we know about our own planetary neighborhood."

The Kepler space telescope identifies planet candidates by repeatedly measuring the change in brightness of more than 150,000 stars in search of planets that pass in front of, or "transit," their host star. At least three transits are required to verify a signal as a potential planet.

Scientists analyzed more than 13,000 transit-like signals to eliminate known spacecraft instrumentation and astrophysical false positives, phenomena that masquerade as planetary candidates, to identify the potential new planets.

Candidates require additional follow-up observations and analyses to be confirmed as planets. At the beginning of 2012, 33 candidates in the Kepler data had been confirmed as planets. Today, there are 105.

"The analysis of increasingly longer time periods of Kepler data uncovers smaller planets in longer period orbits-- orbital periods similar to Earth's," said Steve Howell, Kepler mission project scientist at Ames. "It is no longer a question of will we find a true Earth analogue, but a question of when."

The complete list of Kepler planet candidates is available in an interactive table at the NASA Exoplanet Archive. The archive is funded by NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program to collect and make public data to support the search for and characterization of exoplanets and their host stars.

Ames manages Kepler's ground system development, mission operations and science data analysis. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., managed Kepler mission development. Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp. in Boulder, Colo., developed the Kepler flight system and supports mission operations with JPL at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

The Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore archives, hosts and distributes the Kepler science data. Kepler is NASA's 10th Discovery Mission and is funded by NASA's Science Mission Directorate at the agency's headquarters in Washington.

JPL manages NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program. The NASA Exoplanet Archive is hosted at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology.

The new year is a great time to get yourself pointed in the right direction financially. ?Making small improvements at the beginning of the year is a lot easier than trying to play catch-up,? says financial planner Rick Rodgers, author of ?The New Three-Legged Stool: A Tax Efficient Approach To Retirement Planning.?
?Just as you would embark on an exercise program to lose weight and get physically fit, there are simple steps you can take that will lead to being financially healthy and fit.? Here are Rodgers? seven tips for improving your financial life in 2013.

??Review your credit report?- Borrowing money isn?t the only reason to check your credit. Employers check credit reports and so do insurance companies. Your credit score can have a profound effect on the amount you pay for auto and homeowners insurance ? and perhaps on health and life insurance in the not-too-distant future. Order your free credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com.

??Set up an Automatic Savings Plan (ASP)?- If your employer doesn?t offer this through payroll deduction you can set one up through your bank or brokerage account. Simply have a certain amount of money withdrawn from your checking or savings account each month and deposited into your investment account. That way, you save it before you ever have a chance to spend it. Try to increase the amount you invest at least once a year.

??Establish a cash flow plan?? Business owners know you can?t control what you don?t track. Take the time to forecast your income and expenses for the year, and put it in writing. Then adjust those numbers to reach your goals, such as paying down debt or replacing a car. Track your progress on a regular basis by holding a monthly family finance meeting to review the plan.

??Pay off your credit cards?? It?s especially important to take action on debt in 2013. Cash doesn?t earn much interest sitting in a deposit account (less than 1 percent) and even ?low interest? credit cards charge 10 to 12 percent. So if you?re sitting on any extra savings, consider using it to pay down credit card debt. Your cash flow plan should include a schedule to eliminate credit card debt as quickly as possible.

??Shop your insurance?? Insurance agents are often paid commission based on premium levels, so they have no incentive for finding existing customers lower premiums. However, there is a huge incentive for a competing agent to find you the lowest premium in order to win your business. Make note of the coverage levels you have for your homeowner?s and auto policies and use them to comparison shop. Look at ways to save on your health insurance coverage, too, such as switching to a high-deductible plan and opening a Health Savings Account.

??Write an estate plan?? At a minimum you need to have a valid will, power-of-attorney (POA) for your finances and health-care decisions, and a living will (Advanced Healthcare Directive in some states). Decide who will be your personal representative in the event you become incapacitated (POA) or at your death (executor). If you have minor children, choose who will raise them in your absence and establish a testamentary trust for their finances.

??Meet with a financial adviser?? An adviser is to financial planning as a personal trainer is to an exercise program. Allow yourself to be held accountable by a third party who will push you to help yourself. Good advisers will help you develop a budget, look at your debts, tax situation, retirement and college savings, estate planning and insurance. You don?t have to be a high-net-worth individual to seek the assistance of a financial adviser. Go to the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) and search for one in your area.

Don?t just make a vague resolution to save money. According to Psychology Today, of the millions of American?s who make a New Years resolution, 40 percent have already failed by Jan. 31. Let 2013 be the year you make lasting changes to improve your financial life.

Award-season hopefuls stop in Palm Springs

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) ? The Award Season Express made its first stop of the new year in the middle of the desert a couple hours east of Hollywood at the annual Palm Springs International Film Festival gala.

A blast of Golden Globe nominees and Oscar hopefuls walked the press gauntlet Saturday night, including Naomi Watts ("The Impossible"), Helen Hunt and John Hawkes ("The Sessions"), Ben Affleck ("Argo") and "Arbitrage" star Richard Gere, who received the night's so-called Chairman's Award.

"Great," Gere noted with more than a touch of sarcasm. "That's better than the Governors Award?" he inquired with a chuckle. "What's the pecking order of these awards? I want to know. Am I getting the best award? I'm not going in unless I'm getting the best award!"

Though the 63-year-old Gere has never received an Oscar nomination, there were previous Academy Award winners aplenty at the Palm Springs gala. Among them, Sally Field, the night's honoree for career achievement, including her hard-won role of Mary Todd in director Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln."

"I still can't believe I got the role," Field replied, cracking a smile. "Did I get it."

Turning serious, Field told the black-tie audience she was proud to be part of the film and happy to still be working. "I'm very lucky. ... Next year it'll be 50 years that I've been in the business as a professional. It's been a wild ride," she said.

This upcoming week, the Awards Season Express has a bit of a wild ride itself, with the People's Choice show, two critics awards ceremonies and Thursday morning's Oscar nominations.

So how does the phrase "Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper" sound to the "Silver Linings Playbook" actor?

"That would be incredible," Cooper answered, explaining that he just may sleep through the pre-dawn nomination announcements. "Yeah, I'm sure I'll get up, but maybe I'll be asleep. I don't know."

And just three days after the Oscar nominations, it's the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards ? a "much, much friendlier" show, exclaimed "Hitchcock" nominee Helen Mirren.

"And it has to do with those tables in still quite a small room," she added. "They haven't allowed it to get enormous. ... Everybody table jumps and chats. It's always slightly naughty. The hosts are always naughty. I can't wait to have Tina Fey and Amy Poehler doing it. That's going to be such fun."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congressional leaders on Sunday showed no signs of emerging from their corners to resolve the next step in the financial crisis, with Democrats still talking about higher taxes on the wealthy and the Senate's top Republican suggesting that a crippling default on U.S. loans was possible unless there were significant cuts in government spending.

"It's a shame we have to use whatever leverage we have in Congress to get the president to deal with the biggest problem confronting our future, and that's our excessive spending," said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Last week's deal to avert the combination of end-of-year tax increases and spending cuts known as the "fiscal cliff" held income tax rates steady for 99 percent of Americans but left some other major pieces of business unresolved.

By late February or early March, the Treasury Department will run out of options to cover the nation's debts and could begin defaulting on government loans unless Congress raises the legal borrowing limit, or debt ceiling. Economists warn that a default could trigger a global recession.

Also looming are deep automatic spending cuts expected to take effect at the beginning of March that could further erase fragile gains in the U.S. economy. Then on March 27, the temporary measure that funds government activities expires, and congressional approval will be needed to keep the government running. It's one more chance to fight over spending

Lawmakers said debt talks will consume Congress in the coming weeks, likely delaying any consideration of an expected White House proposal on gun restrictions in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting.

Republicans say they are willing to raise the debt ceiling but insist any increase must be paired with significant savings from Medicare, Medicaid and other government benefit programs. President Barack Obama has said he's willing to consider spending cuts separately but won't bargain over the government's borrowing authority.

"One thing I will not compromise over is whether or not Congress should pay the tab for a bill they've already racked up," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address.

Democrats said further tax increases for the wealthiest Americans were still possible as Congress looks to close the gap between revenues and expenditures. Democrats point out that Obama has already agreed to significant spending cuts, and that the latest deal only gets the nation to about half of the revenue it needs to resolve the red ink.

"Trust me, there are plenty of things within that tax code ? these loopholes where people can park their money in some island offshore and not pay taxes. These are things that need to be closed. We can do that and use the money to reduce the deficit," said Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Senate Democrat.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said she, too, wants to put "everything on the table from the standpoint of closing loopholes."

But McConnell bluntly declared that the "tax issue is over" after last week's agreement.

"We don't have this problem because we tax too little; we have it because we spend too much," McConnell said.

Making the rounds on the Sunday talk shows, McConnell was asked repeatedly whether Republicans were prepared to see the nation default on its spending obligations. McConnell said that wouldn't be necessary, so long as Obama agrees to the spending cuts.

But at one point, when asked by NBC's David Gregory whether the GOP strategy will be to hold the debt ceiling "ransom" in exchange for spending cuts, McConnell said it was a "shame we have to use whatever leverage we have" to get the president's attention.

"None of us like using situations like the sequester (automatic across-the-board spending cuts) or the debt ceiling or the operation of government to try to engage the president to deal with this," McConnell said.

Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., didn't dismiss the idea of allowing a partial shutdown of government until an agreement can be reached. Texas Sen. John Cornyn and other Republicans have floated the idea of a shutdown as a way of winning deeper spending cuts.

"I believe we need to raise the debt ceiling, but if we don't raise it without a plan to get out of debt, all of us should be fired," Graham said.

Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen, the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee, said the Republican strategy amounted to: "Give us what we want ... or we're doing to tank the United States economy."

Pelosi said she believes the president has enough authority under the 14th Amendment to raise the debt ceiling without Congress' blessing. But the White House has said previously that it does not believe that the amendment ? which says the "validity" of public debt shouldn't be questioned ? gives the president that power.

McConnell spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press," ABC "This Week" and CBS "Face the Nation." Pelosi was on CBS. Durbin and Graham appeared on CNN's "State of the Union" and Van Hollen was interviewed on "Fox News Sunday."

Leo talks friendship with Kate, old times and marriage (very briefly)

LEONARDO DiCaprio has become a Hollywood star playing conmen, gangsters, romantic leads and billionaire recluse Howard Hughes.

But his most surprising role of all was giving away Kate Winslet last month at her third wedding.

It came as an even greater surprise to hear that Kate?s actor father Roger, who still lives in her home town of Reading, Berkshire, knew nothing of the marriage of his daughter to Ned RocknRoll.

But by agreeing to such a key part in a secret ceremony, DiCaprio revealed just how close he and Winslet have become since they formed what he describes as an ?unbreakable bond? during the making of the hit film Titanic in 1997.

It has been, he told me in our previous meetings before the wedding, a relationship of laughter and tears all the way. ?She?s one of my closest friends and feels we can say anything to each other,? he says.

?We were both just kids of 21 when we made Titanic all those years ago. But, even then, Kate seemed more mature and worldly than I was.

?I cried on her shoulder many times as we found the demands of filming under the director James Cameron so tough. We have never not been friends since that time. I speak to her all the time. But friends ? not lovers.?

Director Cameron, 58, has since admitted that he pushed his two young leads more than any other actors. Titanic had become a career-long obsession and he didn?t want anything to go wrong.

He even drew Winslet?s nude picture, which featured so markedly in the movie, supposedly sketched by DiCaprio?s character, who sat and watched his co-star sprawl naked on a sofa during the scene.

So what is it that keeps them together, nearly 16 years after the film?s release to become a box office success and, for Winslet, the first of six Oscar nominations?

?A sense of humour,? he says. ?We laugh at the same things. She never lets me take myself seriously, even if I wanted to. We have a special magic.?

DiCaprio, whose latest in a string of relationships with beautiful women ended just two months ago ? this time with 23-year-old model Erin Heatherton ? has often been rumoured to be about to marry like his Titanic co-star.

But he has kept to a bachelor?s life. ?Kate is a great believer in marriage,? he says. ?I admire her for the way she is able to conduct her personal life, which is so hard ? sometimes impossible ? in this business.

?A lot of your life is put on hold when you make movies. Everything, whether personal relationships or friendships, is put on ice when you go on location for five or six months, away from everybody.?

DiCaprio even worked with Winslet?s second husband, Sam Mendes, 47, when he directed them both as husband and wife characters on the 2008 film Revolutionary Road.

Even more bizarrely Mendes, who has since directed the latest Bond film Skyfall, had to watch the couple perform a love scene.

There was obviously a difference of opinion over the scene. ?It may seem strange to do a sex scene with a woman while her husband is directing but it did not seem strange to me,? recalls DiCaprio.

?When the scene was about to start, Kate said, in front of the film crew: ?Wait, wait, this is totally weird.? She turned to both Sam and me and said: ?Are you guys OK with this?? We both looked at each other and said: ?Yeah, we are totally fine.?

She said: ?It is even more weird that you are both OK with this.? But, for me, it was just acting in what was a family atmosphere.?

DiCaprio also points out that he knew Winslet before Mendes even met her. Or, indeed, any of her three husbands. ?We have the ultimate trust and the best of intentions for what we want to do,? he says.

Despite his huge on-screen success DiCaprio, is yet to win an Oscar, unlike Winslet who won best actress for her role as a former Nazi prison guard in The Reader, also released in 2008. She?s the youngest actress ever to accrue six Oscar nominations.leonardo-dicaprio-kate-winslet-children

If there is a shred of envy from DiCaprio he never shows it. ?Kate is like a detective in the way she researches her character. She is committed, professional and probably the most talented actress in the business right now.

?Our own relationship? I would describe it as goofy. We are a little bit older, a little bit wiser but ultimately the same people as we were when we were 21.?

Ironically DiCaprio was set to accept the role of porn star Dirk Diggler (which went to Mark Wahlberg) in the award- winning film Boogie Nights before Titanic.

?It appealed to me more,? he says. ?I like edgy, independent stuff. I had never met Kate but she phoned and said: ?I am going to say yes to this. Will you do so, too? ? So I committed to Titanic instead. Regrets? None.?

DiCaprio, who says of his own marriage prospects, ?I have no plans for anything ? if it happens it happens,? is a loyal and supportive friend for Winslet at a point when her English girl-next-door image has taken a battering.

She has daughter Mia, 12, from her first marriage to assistant director Jim Threapleton and son Joe, nine, with Mendes. She was with her boyfriend Louis Dowler when she met third husband Ned on his uncle Sir Richard Branson?s Necker Island in August 2011.

The wish to keep secret her third wedding from her supportive parents, whom she has regularly praised for their hard work in very modest circumstances, has also struck a discordant note.

But if Winslet?s background was comparatively poor, it appears rich to DiCaprio. His hippy parents, German mother Irmelin and Italian father George, split when he was a baby and he was raised in one of Los Angeles?s toughest districts.

?It was known as Syringe Alley because junkies dumped heroin needles there. But he says: ?I never got the urge to do drugs or rebel because nothing would have shocked my parents.?

The actor who began his career in spectacular fashion at just 18 with such movies as This Boy?s Life and What?s Eating Gilbert Grape, is back on screen with a starring role in Django Unchained, directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Will it give him another chance of an elusive Oscar? No. But he?s soon to be seen in The Great Gatsby, which could be his breakthrough for Hollywood?s biggest award.

?I have a long way to go before I catch up with Kate,? he says.

7 resolutions for a better Earth in 2013

2013 is here, and everyone is busy making (or already breaking) their New Year's resolutions. Mother Nature took a few minutes out of her busy schedule to share a few thoughts on how to improve the situation here on our planet with some New Year's resolutions that should be taken up by mankind.

Here are the top seven resolutions for the Earth in the New Year. Take it away, Mother Nature:

1. Prevent species from going extinct
Earth is in the midst of an enormous extinction crisis, the biggest spate of die-offs since the disappearance of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, according to several studies. The world's level of biodiversity is also down by 30 percent since the 1970s, according to a report by the World Wildlife Fund, a conservation group. The United Nations Environment Program estimates that 150 to 200 species go extinct every day, which is about 10 to 100 times the "background," or natural, rate of extinction.

One problem facing endangered species, particularly in developing countries, is poaching. Driven in part by the demand for animal parts in traditional medicine cures in parts of Asia, poaching (and capture of animals for the pet trade) has only increased ? dramatically ? in the past decade.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. What tribal elders can teach Congress

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Researcher Jared Diamond, the author of "The World Until Yesterday," says Congress could learn a lesson from tribal societies: Listen to your elders.

    2. Why dinosaurs shook their tail feathers
    3. Secret to fish's waterfall-climbing ability
    4. 'Daytime' primates have active nightlife, too

A total of 633 rhinos were killed in South Africa in 2012, for example, according to Reuters. Compare that with 448 killed in 2011 and 13 killed in 2007. Poaching is largely to blame for the extinction of many creatures, including a subspecies of Javan rhino in Vietnam in 2010.

It's hard to focus on other animals and plants all the time. But humans are animals who come from a world replete with other creatures and forms of life. Even now, surrounded as many of you are by urban centers, devoid of forests and most wildlife, people depend on plants and animals for survival. Ultimately the loss of biodiversity will hurt you, as you, dear humans, are part of the web of life. Each species serves a specific function that can't be wholly replaced if one goes extinct, leading to a less productive ecosystem which ultimately provides fewer benefits for humans.

2. Preserve the rainforests
Rainforests are vital reservoirs of plants, animals and microbes. Most terrestrial animals aren't the big, charismatic species like elephants and tigers often associated with the jungles, but rainforest-dwelling arthropods (a group that includes insects, arachnids and crustaceans, all of which have hard exoskeletons).

Arthropods are the most diverse group of animals in the world and perform all kinds of vital roles in their environments, from eating fecal matter to pollinating flowers. Rainforests also contain plants than can help humans; compounds derived from these plants have been used to create many medicines, including the anti-malarial drug quinine, originally found in the Amazon's cinchona tree. It'd be a shame to lose such wealth before even discovering it.

The forests also supply the planet with an enormous supply of oxygen. Even so, from 2000 to 2010, for example, about 93,000 square miles of the Amazon rainforest were razed, covering an area roughly the size of the United Kingdom.

3. Protect areas with high biodiversity
Not all areas are created equal. Certain places should be left alone, such as those that are home to endangered species, species found nowhere else, particularly high varieties of species and those that provide other important ecological benefits.

Examples of areas that need your special attention include Madagascar, which is like no other place in the world ? it is the only spot where lemurs and many other unique life-forms dwell. But forest and grassland habitat on this island off the coast of Africa is being destroyed rapidly; Madagascar has lost at least 90 percent of its original forest cover.

Another jewel would be the Philippines, which has one of the highest levels of biodiversity on the planet, but is threatened by deforestation and development. A single recent expedition found more than 300 species that are likely new to science, including a deep-sea shark that can inflate itself when frightened. But these species are potentially in danger from human activities, while other species could go extinct there and in other spots before they are even discovered.

4. Reduce greenhouse gases and limit climate change
Humans are a gassy bunch, burning fossil fuels and increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide, methane and other heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere.

Many climate scientists have estimated that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere must be limited to 350 parts per million (ppm) to avoid the worst effects of a human-altered climate, such as warmer temperatures, more frequent heat waves and droughts, sea level rise and even more extinction of animals that can't quickly adapt to climate change. The current concentration is nearly 393 ppm and rising about 2 ppm annually, according to the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii.

To avert the worst effects of global warming, humans would need to quickly find alternative fuel sources ? look back to what's been provided to you and harness the sun or the wind or heat from the Earth.

The worst effects of warming can be seen in the Arctic and Antarctic, due to a phenomenon called polar amplification. Many areas throughout the Arctic have already warmed by 3 degrees Fahrenheit (1.7 degrees Celsius) over the last 30 years, heating up much more quickly than the rest of the world and acting as harbingers of things to come.

The poles are also home to magnificent animals like polar bears and penguins, which are sensitive to environmental changes. And that's not to mention the fact these areas store enough frozen water that, if melted, would put most of the world's current urban areas under water. And even if these areas don't completely melt, they could still cause significant sea-level rise.

5. Curb water pollution
Humans are really shooting themselves in the foot with this one. Although big strides have been taken in the United States, Europe and elsewhere, it remains an enormous and growing problem throughout many parts of the world, including China, parts of south Asia and Africa.

Besides the obvious detriments of polluting one's own drinking water, pollution from agricultural runoff, when it reaches the oceans, also creates so-called dead zones ? algae blooms develop and consume all the oxygen in the area and other species that need oxygen die off. The dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico has been steadily growing and recently covered an area roughly the size of New Jersey. Pollution also contributes to coral disease, which is a major unrecognized factor in the decline of coral reefs ? top spots for biodiversity (see Resolution #3).

6. Better manage fisheries and curb shark finning
Commercial-fishing techniques are leading to the deaths of too many fish, sea turtles and marine mammals, often when these creatures aren't targeted by fishermen.

The worst of these techniques is the use of large nets (including dragnets, seines and driftnets, which catch just about everything in their path) and longline fishing, wherein hundreds or thousands of hooks are suspended up to many miles behind boats. The average longline in the Gulf of Mexico stretches for 30 miles, and more than half of the tuna and swordfish caught are thrown back, most of which die, according to the Pew Environment group.

The hunting of sharks has also increased dramatically, primarily due to increased demand for shark fin soup in China, a substance that has repeatedly been shown to be high in toxins. Up to 73 million sharks are killed each year to quench this demand. Ocean ecosystems depend upon these predators to keep the web of life balanced.

7. Consume less
This one is pretty simple: consume less. Especially Americans, who could still survive using less energy and water; most of the world gets by on a fraction. Reuse of materials may be another good practice. This could mean simple changes like reusing shopping bags, alleviating the need for more plastic and paper.

Many items also needn't be thrown away merely because they are out of fashion. A recent study found that a large percentage of appliances that are thrown away still function properly.

In addition, boost energy efficiency by making and buying better cars, like hybrids or electric vehicles powered by renewable sources. You can also do simple things like turning off lights and appliances, using programmable thermostats and replacing air filters in HVAC systems.

Using less plastic would be another good place to start. Now, plastic is found in just about every corner of the globe, for example in thegreat Pacific garbage patch, known to scientists as the North Pacific Subtropial Gyreand even on the floor of the Arctic Ocean.

The Earth's resources are not unlimited, and if humans are not more careful, this will become increasingly obvious.

Dot Earth Blog: Designing Outside the Box

When I stumbled on the grainy video clip above in my laptop this morning, I found myself reflecting on the wonderful work of Douglas Martin, a designer of ocean-going rowing shells whose forays into violin design and construction exemplify the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that I would love to see flourish in other arenas in the next few decades.

I wrote about him for Science Times in 2006 in ?String Theory: New Approaches to Instrument Design.? I?ve posted two other clips of him playing his fiddles on YouTube ? here and here. Many of Martin?s prototypes ? built of balsa wood ? are literally out of the box, in that he puts the structural ribs on the outside of the fiddle body to ease his ability to make adjustments.

This passage from my article conveys how his purposeful rejection of orthodoxy was at least partly learned (and thus illustrates the potential to foster an enthusiasm for ?breaking things on the path to breakthroughs? in our classrooms):

In art school in the 1960s, a professor once tossed one of Mr. Martin?s sketches on the floor and scuffed it up, urging him to abandon caution, and he clearly absorbed that notion.

When a violinist tried an instrument at a recent workshop and one of its blunt shoulders got in the way of his wrist, Mr. Martin summarily sawed off the corner and sealed the opening with a scrap.

I?d like to spend part of this year finding and drawing attention to people who are the Douglas Martin equivalents trying to develop ways to bring illumination and cleaner, cheap sources of cooking energy to the billions who lack these core assets; devising scaleable means of providing potable water and sanitation (not easy) in poor places; closing the huge ?yield gap? between African farmers and there counterparts in many other regions; boosting environmental literacy and engagement with science?

Who?s out there?

For Guaranteed Success In Self Improvement, Have Faith In ...

How about taking a few minutes of your time in order to learn simple steps on improving the rest of your life? If you pay attention to what we have to say, that is what this article can do for you. Read the tips and tricks that we have provided for you, so that you can start to reach your true potential.

Since nobody?s perfect, you?re going to fall off your diet plan sometimes and eat junk food instead of a healthy meal. Try to do better next time, and don?t worry about that cheesecake you had last night. Today is a new day.

Avoid working or exercising too hard, as these could exhaust you to the point that you fail to achieve your goals. While it is admirable to exert your best effort, do not push yourself past your limit. Taking care of your physical abilities is more important than achieving a goal. Short-changing your body in order to meet personal development goals is a terribly counter-productive form of self-improvement.

TIP! Part of setting goals to better yourself is having an idea of where you want your life to go. Choosing long-term goals will help you to gain the right perspective for finding success in life.

Try to make each day more excellent than the previous one. Try to improve yourself constantly. Each day, make sure that you perform better than you ever have before.

Let your personal principles guide your self improvement. Most people have a system of beliefs and principles they subscribe to. When your system is woven together with integrity, your confidence will rise when you put it into action. This will also promote consistency in your life and actions, which is a trait almost everyone finds admirable.

Several people have difficulty meeting someone worthwhile to date. You should consider using the Internet. Two out of every five couples meet on the Internet these days. Who knows? Maybe you can put the web to work for you to find your soul mate. Of course, both websites have their disadvantages, but they are worth a try.

TIP! Avoiding a decision means missing out on an opportunity when engaging in personal development. Even if your knowledge is not what it could be, have the courage to make choices.

Be more productive at work by getting the most out of your time there. One trick to doing this, is to take more breaks. Taking breaks is not a waste of time. It will help you stay relaxed and focused on what you need to accomplish.

Make others feel good by offering them compliments. When you focus on the good in others, you will find that they return the favor.

Avoid going shopping as a form of entertainment or comfort. Spend your time on more productive and useful pursuits. Clean the house, play an instrument or take up a sport. This will reduce stress, save you money and turn you into a more interesting, well-rounded person.

TIP! Life is unpredictable and taking a few calculated risks is necessary. Most people don?t want to risk feelings of rejection or failure, so they never travel from their comfort zone, eventually causing dissatisfaction.

Reduce the stress in your life. Avoid over-reacting when something doesn?t turn out the way you want, because it can cause you stress. Accept whatever has happened instead of adopting a ?woe is me? stance and focus instead on how to overcome the hurdle. Defeatism is never going to help anything.

Therapy is indicated if you feel you cannot deal with your problems. Self-help books can be useful for many small problems, but they won?t help you tackle the bigger issues which could be haunting you. There are many times when talking with another person about a stressful situation is the most effective route to relaxation. Reading a book won?t let you have a dialog the way therapists do.

If you notice yourself struggling with the blues, try increasing the amount of complex carbs in your diet. Adding complex carbohydrates can help keep your body?s serotonin level up. This can also be achieved by upping your intake of raw fruits and veggies, legumes and whole grains.

TIP! Failing at accomplishing something that was important for you can be hard for your ego. The truth about failure is that it is a learning experience in disguise.

When you overreact, you waste your energy and subject yourself to unnecessary anxiety. Stay calm and carefully analyze every situation. If a mistake is the issue, there are ways to correct it or cope with living with your mistake. Be thankful for what you have and not for what you?ve lost.

Do you find yourself consuming alcohol far too often? Is smoking or anything else harming your body? Our bodies are important to maintain, and should be treated with care. Sometimes, eliminating bad habits is what it takes to make your life better. Carefully examine your attitudes and actions and identify areas for improvement.

Getting and staying healthy is one of the most important parts of personal development. If you want to build healthy habits, you need to be motivated to eat better and exercise more. When you are healthy, you feel your best and therefore can be more effective in all the other areas of your life.

Knowing that you deserve only the best is incredibly important in self improvement. You should understand that you owe yourself your best effort. Ultimately, you can be confident that you worked as hard as possible to achieve your goals.

Your willpower can help you find more positive things in your life. Your attitude towards others will affect what happens to you. Try to only want good things to happen to other people. Negative feelings will be less burdensome and less depressing if you make it a practice to maintain a positive mood.

One of the most important elements of personal development is taking proper care of your health. Being healthy correlates directly to feeling good. When your health is good you think wisely and make good decisions. You also save money on medical expenses. Make better choices, dedicate yourself to it.

TIP! Discover what is standing between you and your goals. This can prove problematic for most folks.

Put in maximum effort to reach your self improvement goals. Let your passions guide you. You may never find yourself the absolute top dog in any one field, but you can still strive to be inspiring to those around you. Do the best you can at what you do, and bask in the pride it will bring you.
